in Success of Adult Day Center Opening

(Wausau, WI) The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin has awarded Homme Heights/Forest Park Village nearly $13,000 in grants toward the construction of an adult day care center and courtyard. On September 17, the Center will celebrate its one year anniversary.

Amy Forst, director of operations for Homme Heights, stated, “the goals of the Adult Day Center are to provide meaningful social and recreational opportunities to people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in a secure environment and to provide relief and support to families and caregivers.”

“We saw a need for an adult center due to our aging population and we approached the community for support,” said Forst. The Community Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant from the Marvin & Ruth (Rudie) Schuette Fund to merge two apartments at Forest Park Village to form a functional adult service center. The center, located at 201 N 7th Street, in Wausau, includes a recreational space, dining area, napping room, and handicap accessible shower. Reconstruction also included adding a parking lot and private entrance for easier accessibility of the building.

As a part of the Community Foundation’s 25 for 25 Anniversary Grant, the Homme Adult Day Center received a grant to construct an enclosed courtyard. The courtyard space allows participants to enjoy the great outdoors of Wisconsin and take part in activities such as gardening and cookouts that provide unique sensory experiences.

In its first year of operation, the Adult Day Center has directly served 21 people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, and the need for affordable respite for caregivers is growing. “Our community is fortunate to have a resource to assist families who have taken on the primary role and great responsibility of care giving for a loved one,” commented Jean Tehan, executive director of the Community Foundation. “We are proud to be a funding partner in providing a safe and enjoyable environment for the growing number of families that need this type of service.”

The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin is a nonprofit community corporation, created by and for the people of north central Wisconsin, and exists to enhance the quality of the greater Wausau area.
